name that quote
Feb. 23rd, 2005 01:21 pmThis article, via greylock and hestia, reminded me of something i've been meaning to ask for a while.
Does anyone know where the following snatch of dialogue comes from?
"Why have you forced me into this position?"
"Because you said it could never happen here, but we woke up one morning and we were in a fascist state."
"Those of us who respect law and order are free. It's criminals like you who cry fascist."
"You're just as free as the leash you're on - you tug it too hard, they'll hang you by it."
(It's sampled on a Voodoo Lovecats record and i've been wondering for ages where it's from).

(I thought it'd be somefink innerlekshewl like 1984 or The Prisoner - it sounded like something from the '50s anyway).
Fancy that.

Date: 2005-02-23 10:23 pm (UTC)I have fond memories of V (though I've seen it since and it's dated terribly) up until the series, which rapidly degenerated into silliness.

Date: 2005-02-24 05:11 am (UTC)The series did get silly, didn't it? The ending made no sense at all (i suspect it was a 'network's pulled the plug, come up with an ending quick' sort of thing).
One tangent i thought was interesting, that they never followed, came near the end of the miniseries (i think), when the dissident Visitor explained that they were short of water because it had been used up in weapons against the Leader's enemies. Someone said something to the effect of "if they're his enemies, they must be our friends" and was met with an uncomfortable silence. I'm pretty sure the miniseries ended with the resistance sending a broadcast to the Visitors' enemies asking for help. That could have led to all sorts of juicy possibilites as to who or what might have answered..

Date: 2005-02-24 05:16 am (UTC)The Nazi references were very obvious though, and it wasn't exactly cutting edge political commentary (coming 40 odd years after the fall of the Reich). On the other hand, the targetting and discrediting of scientists as the main enemies of the Visitors' 'fascist state' could have some relevance today..
