Daffodils

May seem a silly question, but does anyone know much about daffodils and when/how long they're in season?

More specifically, i'm trying to work out if, say, a local supermarket seemed to have copious numbers of daffodils on sale at the registers each year around the time of the anti-cancer council's Daffodil Day appeal, though unrelated to said appeal, whether the fact that they're "in season" would be a fair explanation.

It would make sense that an appeal's theme might be chosen to be appropriate to what's in season, so i'd hate to jump to any rash conclusions.

Daffodils are a bulb that does flower in spring and early summer. My mother and grandmother both used to have whole flower beds of them!

AFAIK, they're in season now. Sillily enough, I know more about when they flower in the UK than here: they're the flower of St David, patron saint of Wales and it's considered a good omen if they flower on his day - March 1st.

March 1st is the first day of spring, so I imagine that they would bloom around the same time here, probably earlier as it's not so cold. I've already seen copious quantities of them in my neighbourhood. That's perhaps why Daffodil Day was last week.

I would say that the Daffodil Day appeal would have to occur during daffodil season (late winter and through spring) in order to actually work. There would be no point having a daffodil-focused event if there were no daffodils! They are very popular cut flowers, along with jonquils (strongly scented flowers which look like little daffodils), which are ubiquitous at this time of year. All purveyors of flowers, from florists to petrol stations, will have daffodils while they're in season.

IIRC, they flower in (late?) June.
Planting is more complicated. I think that it can be left as late as May but the bulbs have to be planted quite shallow and may only be good for one shot. Deep planting at the start of Autumn is healthier for them and they'll self-divide, flower annually, etc.

Plastic daffodils were used to deadly effect in a Dr Who story (third doctor, the second Auton story?), something Wordsworth failed to comment on in his poetry... ;)

Daffodils are definitely in season around about now. As far as growing them goes, it's best to plant them and just leave them in the ground all year round, they can also take a fair amount of neglect, which is why you see them flowering quite happily around abandoned houses/fields in the countryside.
If you want, you can wait until the flowers/foliage die down, then lift and store the bulbs, then replant them the following year.
The Cancer Council appeal does coincide with the fact that they are in season.
