I finally got to see Schadenfreude tonight. I almost didn't go, as i was still seedy from last night's excesses, but as night came on i started to feel human again so i said "sod it" and went.
Very glad i did - they were great. Very much in that early '80s post-punk rock vein that once might have been called 'goth', but with a more modern heavy edge to it. Parts reminded me of various things from early Cure to Children On Stun to Danse Macabre, plus other things i couldn't put a finger on. Whatever, it was exactly my kind of thing, and much tighter than i'd expected from how other people had described them. Go and see them. You know you want to.
And very considerately, they started right on time as soon as i got there and finished just in time for me to shoot through and catch the 9.45 train and be back home before 11. I didn't have time to properly soak up the inner-urban rock pub atmosphere of the Rob Roy, but i'm half on auto-pilot tonight anyway and would probably have fallen asleep if i stayed another hour. As i was heading home, i noticed people on city-bound trains all dressed up and wondered where they were going, before realising it was still early and they were only just starting their night out (i'm more used to coming back at Night Rider time, with everyone falling asleep in their seat like i was starting to).
But somehow i was awake enough to enjoy the the band when they were on, and was bopping away on my bar stool the whole time. Not drinking didn't hurt my enjoyment either, which is an interesting idea i have to explore more, not to mention making it a night out for just over $15 with train fare.
This good bands as opening acts lark is a bit all right, methinks. More of it, i say.
