For all the talk lately about whether Australians should be required to embrace 'Australian values', has anyone actually stated what those values are?

I think it involves going to the sport, getting drunk and being loud.

If it involves beer, prawns and the barbecue I'm all for it. If it involves sport, voting liberal and dancing the rhetoric tango, Canada looks good.

Meat! Prawns! Beer!

(watch out for the dropbears).

I remember when Howard wanted 'values' taught in schools. Imagine trying to come to a consensus even within one school, let alone an entire country as to what is right. The idea that we have cohesion on so called "values" is so ridiculous, but the poll on ninemsn currently suggests most Australians think differently: "Should migrants who don't observe Aussie values be kicked out?" Over 69 000 say "yes" and only 10 000 say "no". Be afraid.

Yeah this had me looking up the damn oath/affirmation of citizenship earlier! Which goes on about respecting the "democratic" country and our "rights" and whatnot. I mean it's fairly general.

But hey. What about everyone born here not beholden to such pledges? We none of us make a pledge out of t'womb saying we'll be good little vegemites TM. Which is when I get mad - why do "true blue aussies" not apply said same respect for law and democracy that they demand on newcomers dammit *froths*.

I think, if we're gonna have pledges and affirmations of citizenship and all that kind of thing, that it should be that!

"I hereby promise to be a good little Vegemite." I ask you - what could be more Australian than that? :D It's perfection!

(and I bet you all think I'm joking, don't you? *arch grin*)

Actually, I don't think that's such a bad idea.
Assuming you want to describe what the quintissential good little vegemite is.

Well, let's see... Vegemite is good for people, dark but enjoyable, has a healthy bitterness, unmistakable, tasty, instantly recognisable as Australian, and should never be taken in excess.

*eyebrow* I think I like the sound of that...
