Sporadic update number the whatever

Trooped out to Cabaret Nocturne for Vampyre X on Friday night. The Five Venoms were supposed to headline but cancelled due to illness (seems to be a Dream jinx). First act Electrokore were more kore than electro - Psalm 69 style ministry more than anything. While i'm well over that sort of music generally, i still don't mind it live and enjoyed the set. Vampyre X have changed a bit - dropped the Misfits covers (bar one) and more of a thrashy sound than before (more 'Green Hell' than 'Last Caress' to put it in Misfits terms). Still enjoyed them, though i miss the '50s melodies of the Misfits songs. Maybe there's a gap for another '50s flavoured horror-punk band in town. Danced much, stayed late, missed most of Saturday.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang on Saturday night was fun again. It seemed quiet when i got there then became suddenly crowded just after midnight (you'd think i'd have been going to goth clubs long enough to not be surprised by that, but it always does). Missed Mr Zulu Death Mask's set, which i'd been curious to hear, but loved the rest of the night's musical fare, as usual.
Chatted with
andricongirl,
dukeofmelbourne and
psychotopia early on but was a bit trashed from Cabaret Nocturne the night before (there's that old age thing catching up with me again) and was probably a little distracted (not that a nightclub is ever the best place for chatting, though that's where i mostly see people these days). Michael commented on the undanceability of Belladonna & Aconite, which made me want to go dance to it, but i wasn't fired up enough yet to be the only dancer at the time, then the post-midnight influx arrived and the floor was packed. Later the mix of alcohol, caffeine and floorspace found a workable balance, though i still wasn't energetic enough for Horror High School, which i decided needs a partner for old fashioned rock'n'roll dancing (and to know how to rock'n'roll dance - high on the list of "if i ever had the time" things i'd like to learn). The Bolshoi and Easy Cure were more my speed for the night.
Didn't end up playing anything like the set i'd planned, as the mood was all wrong for the rockier things i had in mind. In fact, the only song i'd planned that i did end up playing was Kate Bush's 'Hounds of Love', which i'd had second thoughts about as a bit slow, but that matched the mood more by then (though i do wonder now if a 'night winding down' mood is really one to follow). The more deathrock stuff i had planned will suit next month's theme even better though, so it'll keep. One annoyance was the cd player deciding to repeatedly reject a couple of my burnt cds as i was trying cue them, so i ended up playing two Mission songs in a row (oh, the ignomy!) while fighting with it. It's a bugger as it probably means i'll have to lug more of the original cds along just to be sure. Ah well, better to find out now. I'd also planned to play as many requests as i could, but this time it was a sheet largely full of Rammstein, VNV and 'The Beautiful People' - i thought everyone would have known what the night was about by now, but i guess not.
Anyway, here's this month's set, for posterity's sake:
Tiamat - Brighter than the Sun
Siouxsie and the Banshees - This Wheel's on Fire
The Cure - The Hanging Garden
Killing Miranda - Touched by Jesus
Kate Bush - The Hounds of Love
Christian Death - Electra Descending
Joy Division - Novelty
Bauhaus - Lagartija Nick (r)
The Mission - Blood Brothers (r)
The Mission - The Dance Goes On
Switchblade Symphony - Wallflower (close)
Tossed and turned when i did get to bed, thanks to lingering Red Bull effects, and so blinked and missed Sunday. Which brings us to now.

Date: 2005-07-04 03:49 am (UTC)It seems you're on earlier next month, which should be good, as I'm sure you'll have a packed dancefloor if you play before everyone has gotten tired/drunk/drifted off home.

Date: 2005-07-04 04:38 am (UTC)It is ironic that people complain about all the clubs being the same and when someone does something different they want to request those same artists. Anyway, it wasn't like that the first two weeks with some really great requests made, so hopefully more people who "get it" will be about in August.

Date: 2005-07-04 05:41 am (UTC)I've been expecting to have that conversation sooner or later. I've only had to say "Sorry, don't have any of that. No, none of that either." so far, but it wouldn't surprise me to have someone saying "No NIN? I thought this was supposed to be a goth club?" one of these days.
I can actually sympathise with someone not getting to hear any of the music he likes (god knows, i've bitched about it often enough) but it's hard when there's ten years worth of people who think 'goth' does mean things like NIN, Manson and VNV.
Ironically enough, i'm almost in favour of dropping the word "goth" from the advertising altogether.

Date: 2005-07-05 12:03 am (UTC)Thanks, a lot of people have been saying that.
It's a photo Elaine took in Brunswick Street on our old crappy digital camera. I really like the composition (even before cropping).

Date: 2005-07-05 05:36 am (UTC)I'm DJing at Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a monthly goth/deathrock/horror-rock night at Retro. I gave up DJing at 'mainstream' goth nights after Heresy finished, as i'm not really in touch with that scene. Sticking to what i know now.
