oh, my aching legs
Jun. 5th, 2005 02:58 pmAs expected, last night was a blast. I spent most of the night dancing my arse off (if anyone finds it, please let me know) and am surprised my legs will hold me up today. If i look, i half expect to have quads like Arnie Schwarzethinger today.
The crowd size seemed just right this time - busy enough to have a good energy but uncrowded enough to be able to actually fit on the dance floor (well, most of the time). And the music was gorgeous - gothier and glammier than a glammy gothy thing, and properly appreciated as it should be. Nothing warms the old cockles like seeing a whole room dancing to the likes of Nina Hagen's 'Smack Jack' or The Cramps' 'Zombie Dance'. Except perhaps being reminded of the wonderfulness of songs like the Bolshoi's 'Away' (which i'd forgotten all about) or Christian Death's 'Electra Descending'.
About the only bit i didn't enjoy so much was when i was djing. It started off okay, with a Birthday Party request that went down pleasingly well (i was wondering if things like Mr Clarinet would work, and it's encouraging to know folks do want to hear that sort of thing) and was going fine until about the third song in when i managed to knock my cd bag off the table and scattered cds all over the floor. Thankfully none of them came out of their cases somehow, but between scrambling about trying to gather them all up and getting the next songs together, i got all flustered and then kept making mistakes like queueing the wrong songs and losing the fight with the uncooperative play button (luckily none of the mis-selected songs actually sucked, though they weren't necessarily the right ones for the moment). Nobody seemed to care anyway, but i didn't end up playing the sort of set i'd planned to and it seemed a bit stale and felt like damage control much of the time. Ah well, that set i spent all month carefully planning and fine tuning will keep for another time.
Anyway, i got to burn off the stress after that dancing to Lyle's last set (more Nina Hagen!) until the venue said it was time to go home and threatened to release the hounds. Since it seems we have a kicking out time, i think it might be in order to reintroduce the good ol' Fuck Off Home Song tradition - not any of that Kermit the Frog shit, mind, but something that sounds like a finale (perhaps something anthemic like Mephisto Walz's 'Alle In Ashe' or PiL's 'Order of Death' or frenetic like the Nekromatix's 'Haunted Cathouse') to close the night in style.

For a while here they tried "Double-Barreled Prayer", but folk were still dancing.

Hmm, i'm of the view that a Fuck Off Home song shouldn't be a bad/ironic/stupid song, but one that seems like a big finale to send the night off. If people dance til the end, even better, but knowing it's the last of the night.
It could be something like 'Alle In Asche' to wind down slowly, or 'Haunted Cathouse' to go out in a blaze of psychobilly distortion pedals. One of my favourite potential Fuck Off Home songs is a track called 'Panacea' by an otherwise po-faced doom metal band called Sirrah. It's a wierd, boppy, almost jazzy song with demented goth and death metal vocals, that ends in a ridiculously overdone recitation of Hamlet's 'to be or not to be' speech and roaring applause to fade out. Something like that'd be a brilliant way to end the night (provided we get a few minutes warning before the hounds are to be released).
Might have to lobby the boss man on the issue. Oh, hi Lyle. :)

Date: 2005-06-05 01:58 pm (UTC)The Cure one is the only one that looks askew... and I reckon it would be a nice change.

Date: 2005-06-05 11:59 pm (UTC)I like all the songs, but the set seemed a bit flat to me - lacking something. But that could have just been my stressed out frame of mind. I really like that Fear Cult song (the only of theirs i've heard) and had a good dance to it too.
Check the other setlists from the night. It was aural orgasm (aurgasm?) territory all night.

I think i felt off about my set because i spent the whole time going 'fuck, now what?' instead of 'ah ha, just as i planned'. May have to go easier on the vodka jellies next time too.
