Answers to questions from [livejournal.com profile] gothsuck

  1. I met your lovely wife Elaine on Saturday night - I called her your g/f by mistake. How did you propose & did you get married in a Church of God?

It was actually Elaine who proposed to me, in a stealthy sort of way, along the lines of "so, when we get married, do you want to do it here?" (ie Montsalvat, which is where we did indeed get married).  Officially, i 'proposed' to her about a year later as a 'surprise', but that was just a cover story so she wouldn't get her arse kicked for not buying the engagement ring through the low-quality ripoff-merchant jewelry company she worked for at the time.  The wedding was held at the chapel there, but with a civil celebrant and our own words.

  2. What is your favourite band/song of all time?

Ooh, so many to choose from.  I don't know if i have favourite bands and songs any more, just lots and lots i really like.  I could maybe pick on The Cure as hugely influential and with many great songs for many different moods, but i also don't really like anything they've done since the '80s. Alternatively, the Ramones always have a special warm'n'fuzzy place in my heart.  A favourite song of all time is even harder, especially as i seem to spend much more time listening to newer 'favourites' and discoveries lately, but if i have to pick something i might say 'Science Fiction' from Rocky Horror, though there's probably 100 other songs i like equally.  (Hmm, come to think of it i once did a top 100 many years ago - i'll have to hunt it out and see how much it's changed).

  3. Did you originate from Vicco? (Your face seems familiar - just wondering if you are another ex-pat)

I'm a gloomy Victorian, born and bred.  I was born in Melbourne but grew up in and around Ballarat.  You've probably seen me around for the last few years here and there (i remember seeing you around in the days of Blue Velvet).

  4. Do you enjoy Dj'ing or would you rather be on the dancefloor?

It's fun when the crowd is enjoying it, though in the past it's also been frustrating at times.  My main reason for originally getting into it was because of all the great music out there that never got played in clubs and because i was sure there were others who also wanted to hear it.  But too often i found i had no frigging clue what other people liked and wanted to hear (other than the 'hits') and it was always a really hit and miss affair. In the end i came to the conclusion that someone who doesn't go to many goth clubs because he thinks most of the music is crappy is probably the last person who should dj at one, and that people should really only dj stuff they know and like.  Of course, something like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is something i'll enjoy being in the crowd for as much as behind the cd player (and getting to do both in the one night is brilliant).

  5. What is your poison?

I'm quite fond of dark rum and cola, though discovering at Dream that it's cheaper than even light beer has led to some bad Saturday hangovers, as i'll keep drinking it just for the taste even when i know i don't need any more.  Being a tightarse, beer is staple drinking fare, though for my liver's sake i'm trying to stick to light beer as much as i can, especially at clubs when i could be there for hours (light beer is good for moderation as i reach that point where you just can't face the thought of drinking another one, round about the time i'm just happily intoxicated).

And in case anyone else wants questions, here's the gameplan again:

1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

I'm the boringest! And here's those questions:

1. Have you ever been part of a bikie club?

2. Do you think the world your kids are growing up in is a better or worse place than the one you grew up in?

3. If one of the kittens were to one day say: "dad, i think i'm gay", what advice would you give?

4. How did you first meet Mrs_E?

5. What's your next construction project going to be, or has it already started?

Some questions, at last:

1. What is it that drives you to create art?

2. What artist's work most moves you and why?

3. What aspects of your life do you prefer to keep workmates or family in the dark about?

4. Issues with particular workplaces and colleagues aside, do you enjoy what you do for a living?

5. What is the most important thing you want to accomplish in your lifetime?

Questions, at long last:

1. What are some of the similarities and differences you've seen between the 'fetish' and 'goth' scenes?

2. In terms of 'fetish' or 'kink' or interests, do you see it as something you do, something you're part of or something you are?

3. What qualities do you respect and admire in people?

4. Did you plan your tattoos for personally symbolic meanings, or more for aesthetic effect?

5. Would you recommend time in the military as a good experience to have?

Replies ... :)

This was both harder and easier that I thought :) Some quite thought provoking questions there, thanks for that.

I believe I've answered them, but sometimes felt I was running off at the keyboard :)

1. What are some of the similarities and differences you've seen between the 'fetish' and 'goth' scenes?

Similarities:
- both like to dress outrageously
- usually in black, with the occasional splash of colour to stop stereotyping
- often liberal lashings of pvc, latex, corsets and exposed flesh
- both like to indulge in BDSM, but the goths tend to sublimate this tendency, if not flat out deny it :)
- in the right circumstances, both are quite willing to take a flogging, literally, as well as indulge in some pain play

Differences
- goths tend to be more into music and dance and the appreciation thereof
- often take much better care about their appearance - both in terms of dress and make up
- whilst standoffish, till they get to know you, tend to not make the sam assumptions of "dom"/"sub" that the fetish scene often does
- appear to "deny" their fetish leanings

2. In terms of 'fetish' or 'kink' or interests, do you see it as something you do, something you're part of or something you are?

More something I do, although there are aspects that, I believe, are definitely a part of my make up.
I enjoy a bit of needle play and don't mind the odd bit of corset wearing.
I've moved way from some of the more obvious aspects of kink and fetish, but it is still there, just doesn't need to be let out as often :).
I suspect I'm more of a voyeur than a participant, but we all have our kinks :)
I don't believe it is something I am, as I've moved away from a lot of the scene because of the overly, to me, levels of pretentiousness and, not to put too fine a a point on it, bullshit.

3. What qualities do you respect and admire in people?

Honesty
A willingness t accept me for what I am (potentially weird, but usually harmless :))

4. Did you plan your tattoos for personally symbolic meanings, or more for aesthetic effect?

They tend to be more for aesthetic effect. My first was to be like a friend of mine, but I soon found myself somewhat addicted. :) - you can never have only ONE tattoo :)
I tend to put a little more planning into my tattoos now than in the past, but that is because I have become more aware of trying to have them fit together. Not necessarily a single theme, but to have enough commonality that they "fit" together. As a result, there is a tribalesque theme for three of the four tattoos I have and Lady Death is "dark" enough on her own to fit in. :)
The roses on my left shoulder are getting some companions :) The outline looks good and I suspect once the colours go in, it should be spectacular :)

5. Would you recommend time in the military as a good experience to have?

I now have mixed feelings about this. I suspect that without the military background, I'd not be where I am now. It gave me discipline, a fair bit of travel, a trade and exposure to people I'd not have otherwise met. It has left me with people I know in most of the states of Australia, although that is now starting to dwindle, as I hermit a lot nowadays :)
On the whole, I think it was a positive experience and given the chance to do it again, I'd say yes, but possibly get out sooner than 20 years :)
