For those not burnt out with politics by now, Morgan Jaffit's refreshingly positive take is well worth reading:
http://www.livejournal.com/users/morganjaffit/7940.html

For what it's worth, i do encourage everyone to post their ideas on what we can do to fix things whenever they think of them. We have a lot of lively discussion going on here, but too much of it is reminding each other what's "fucked up right there" when we could do so much more pooling our ideas on how to improve the situation.

And i'm not just talking about changing votes, but hearts and minds, which to me are what it's really about.

Keep your hopes up, people.

I wish more people in the world had your rational and balanced outlook. Including myself.

I wish i had it, to tell the truth.

This stuff is addressed to me as much as anyone.

i've given up its too depressing ..

well, you know, for the moment at least. its a bit much

I pretty much knew the aussie public would put howard in again.. gut feeling, but the "mandate" in both houses really is the worst case scenario..

and they can change the way the senate works if the wanted to ..

I'd really like to be able to say: "hey, if economic fiddling is all people want from a government, leave them to it", forget about these stupid games and get on with finding small ways to make the world a little better that have nothing to do with politics, but i can't forget that there are still people behind razor wire, lives being ruined and real suffering that just won't go away by being ignored.

How do you make people care?

I'm feeling a whole lotta gloom and doom, along with the 'i need to become more active starting very soon', so it's refreshing to read posts like this that remind me that its not all gloom and doom forever more. For that I thank you.

Thank Morgan. It's good to be able to read a more positive outlook on life, and i want to get back to that myself.

I can't deny that these are dark days, probably for everybody (and i'm not just talking about an election), but as smilesnspiders put it recently, they say the darkest hour is just before the dawn, and maybe that's what this is.

I've been trying to fight off the doom and gloom but it got to me today. I was fighting back the tears on a city tram and I rrrrrreally hate to cry in public.

I guess we also need to make an effort to remind ourselves that there is still kindness and decency and beauty in the world (our mission, should we choose to accept it). Maybe that's also a way of picturing what sort of world we do want to live in, as a way to help make it happen..

heh
I don't need to be that ambitious. I'd be happy if the early to mid 1990s came back, with better employment of course.

eh
I sound like an old codger.
