Reddragdiva's post (http://www.livejournal.com/users/reddragdiva/188129.html) just reminded me of something.

Last night on the late news there was a story about a brawl breaking out after an Australia Day celebration somewhere in Sydney. I swear the word "unAustralian" was quoted at least twice from bystanders.

God i hate that word.

Especially considering the fact that pissing on and then getting in a blue with somebody is a time honoured tradition of Australian partying!

Strewth! Next they'll be telling us that hairy, beer-gutted footy players wearing pink tutus and footy socks to parties is "unAustralian". *pah*

Novelty BBQ aprons are "unAustralian"!

Obscene stubby holders are "unAustralian"!

Stone the bloody crows, et al, et cetera, and so on and so forth.

That's unAustralian of you.

Now, wrap yourself in a flag, dye your hair red and blue, tatoo the boxing Kangaroo on your cheek, sink piss and get into a bloody brawl.

Please get me a t-shit [initially typed "t-shirty"] with that word emblazoned on the front. I need to wear it in public and open a few eyes / make a few people think.

I'm thinking one that says something like: 'Better undead than unAustralian' or similar (though i'm still trying work how the irony balances out on that).

It's probably too long, but how about something like "I'd rather be unAustralian than behave like all of YOU."

Perhaps just the original "proudly unAustralian" is simplest. But the trouble with that is that it would probably just push the buttons of people who are already suspicious of wanky intellectual snobs looking down on the Ordinary 'Strayan (something widely cited by the likes of Andrew Bolt in why people like the Greens are out of touch).

I was kind of playing with ideas that would make the term look as ridiculous as it actually is (and maybe having a swipe at the ugly things creeping into our culture). Something like "Keep an eye on your neighbours, they may be unAustralian" or similar. Playing around with the old 'better red than dead' gave the undead quote (which doesn't quite work due to double-irony).

Personally I think the use of the word "un-Australian" is itself un-Australian.

I read in a Telegraph that on Australia Day, a woman in Adelaide had poured keroscene over some guy coming out of a pub, and then set him alight! Would that be "unAustralian"?

And what about Skase's widow? They're thinking of denying her citizenship (she renounced hers a while ago).
