Slipping into The World Is Shit mode again.

Reading on anti-deportation mailing lists about a campaign lobbying Emirates airline, who the Immigration Department use to deport people to Iran, and ideas of leafletting outside Collingwood football games next year (sponsored by Emirates), all i can think is "What's the point? People Just Don't Care".

Fuckit, i should go back to bitching about EBM - it only makes me want to kick speakers in, not people's skulls.

People outside Collingwood games won't care because they're going to football games - and that's what they care about.

Flier, and you'll come across as the loony left. And they don't want to have to read - but they don't mind thinking.

I suggest what needs to be done, for example, is form groups such as "Collingwood Fans Against Emirates" and a bit of culture jamming.

We live in an isolationist, soundbyte world - and the battle needs to be fought on that battle ground.

Kerry, if nothing, showed us that we don't care about facts or nuance - we like shock and awe and 30 second ideas.

Feh, Australians will care when Eddie Maguire tells them to.

I know what you mean. It feels like the whole world has turned its back on everything that's important, and it feels like they've turned on us too. I really don't understand what's happening. It's not even revenge. I can understand revenge.

The only consolation I can offer is that the last time the world was THIS right-wing (ie, Thatcher, Fraser and Reagan), punk kicked off. For every action, an equal and opposite reaction.

Actually I've been reading a couple of things saying that having Bush back in, with all the smugness that that will entail, will almost guarentee a Democrat President in 2008 as people get sick of it.

Here's hoping.

Boycott campaigns work. Even more so if you can get a competitor airline to state that they will not deport people who are facing death and torture.

Thanks for the heads-up. Last time I fly Emirates.

Better still, I'll draft a form letter and send it out to the refugee groups that I'm contact with... Along with Labor for Refugees.. I mean, there's only a thousand members there ;-)

Your subject line pretty much sums up how I feel about it all.

Meh, boycotting an airline isn't going to change anything. They'll simply find another airline (which is guaranteed not to be as pleasant as Emirates) until they run out, at which time they'll use military transports if that is what it takes.

Blaming the airline is pretty futile and even if successful doesn't actually get anything done.

Rant over. I shall now resume visions of the Burning Bush.

Sadly, nothing is going to change the situation as long as the policy is popular with the Australian public.

How to make Australia give a shit about something other than their mortgage repayments is the big question, and that i don't know.

The best idea i've seen is the suggestion that refugee advocates should take the money they spend on bussing people to futile protests and instead buy quarter page ads in the Herald Scum and 'Strayan telling the stories of individual asylum seekers and what happened to them. At the moment i have trouble believing most Australians would give a shit even then, but there might be some out there to prove me wrong.
