From what i hear, the backlash against Bush mostly had an impact in areas that are home to the 'intellectual elites', while the 'ordinary' folk stuck with Dumbya. Just like in Australia.
And, in both cases, i've heard at least part of it was a backlash against such 'elites' (a quote i've seen from some pro-Republican site put it something like "you know what else we don't like - we don't like you").
Well, if using your brain and giving a shit about more than yourself and your own makes you part of an 'intellectual elite', then i guess we can say the feeling's mutual.
