unexiting update
Oct. 30th, 2005 08:07 pmWe went up the Empress on Friday night for Sforzando and pirate karaoke (it's only a few hundred paces from our front door, so there's little excuse for missing them twice). As before we were close to the only people to bother dressing up, at least until Simon arrived with a grab-bag of swords, hooks and paper pirate hats. I'd sworn i wouldn't get sucked into doing the karaoke thing again (the International Criminal Court still has extradition warrants out for me from the last time) but relentless nagging and a lack of takers crumbled my resistance in too short a time. Belted out 'Surfin' USA' in a voice i hoped would sound like i meant to be that off-key and no doubt fooled no-one. Simon took up the challenge to tackle Queen's 'Flash' and put in an admirable effort since he'd only heard the song once before. We had a bit of a jig to Sforzando's own songs, but i'm far too unfit to keep it up for long (and dancing to a Sforzando song is like dancing to six goth songs).
I was only going to drink light beer as i was trying to shake off this chest cold i've had all week, but i gave in to the sweet pale ale TxxxPxx bought me to get me drunk enough to agree to get up and sing (which i'd already caved in to before she got back, but i won't tell her if you don't). Later i wisely didn't go collect my free beer for my crime against music, but i did sip at a beer Ian had rejected but i found quite nice (hey, i drink CUB beer and instant coffee and enjoy it - no sophisticated pallet here). Fought off a hangover in the morning to go off to taekwondo, and a couple of cold'n'flu capsules kicked in for just the right time. I'd been angsting over whether to skip training for Georgia's pickernic, but decided to go with what i should do rather than what i'd enjoy more (sorry Georgia), especially as i missed last week being sick. I'm really feeling the pressure about this grading, but at least i got the chance yesterday to bring up the fact that i haven't really had much chance to practise anything for it, especially self defence. I still don't think i should be doing it this year, as i'd much rather go into it confident that i've put in the work and knowing that my skills are up to scratch, instead of just scraping through to get it over with and then working on my skills later. But i've decided to let my teachers decide whether they think i should do it and trust in their judgement, though i'll make sure i'm up front about exactly where i think my abilities are at.
We stayed in last night and laid off the sauce for a change, to give our livers and brains a little chance to recover (though i swear we didn't drink enough on Friday night to warrant the hangovers we had - it must still be the cold virus). We'll probably go off to CBD tomorrow night to see the Dead Things, playing with Catwitch and the Five Venoms. Hopefully the bands won't play too late (as they tend to do there) but a sleep in and daylight savings time should help there.
Tonight it's video and cider night (maybe some more of Bowie's 'Hunger' series) and some curried tempeh sausage rolls. Then hopefully another rare and wonderful sleep-in in the morning. Mmmmm, sleep-in.
