Be vewwy qwiet..
Aug. 17th, 2005 09:48 amThe other night i was walking through Camberwell on the way to training, when i spotted a white rabbit (no fob watch, sorry) nosing about the nature strip. I didn't want to walk too close while there was traffic going by, in case it ran on the road and became a rabbit pizza, and while i waited for the traffic to clear it occurred to me that someone was probably looking for it, or would be later, and may not find it in one piece. So i decided to take a punt and knock at the nearest house with a light on and just ask if they knew anyone who had a rabbit. I opened a gate and walked up the pathway, half expecting to have hounds released on me, and rang the doorbell a couple of times before someone answered. "Sorry if it's a silly question, but do you know anyone around here who has a rabbit?". "Yes, it's mine!" she said, "It escaped this afternoon and i've been looking for it".* "Well it's just out on.. erm.. right there." It had followed me up the garden path. So i helped distract it for a couple of minutes while she caught it, then continued on.
I love the high spontaneous acts of helpfulness can provide, at a cost of about two minutes of time and some small chance of embarrassment.
(* Sorry, no Alvin Purple ending - this is a nice story.)
