'Twas good to get back to Dream again. Listening to the 5,6,7,8s record that was playing before the djs got going was a good way to start the night (can't believe i've never paid any attention to that band before and missed god knows how many visits - now their shows will probably be crowded and twice as expensive after they were in whatever hip movie it was, but i digress). As a new acquaintance was saying early in the night, it's nice to have a place where you can sit and talk and have a more social atmosphere. It helps when it's not so loud you have to shout, though saying that seemed to be the cue for the volume to start creeping up. Oh well.

Ran into a friend from the Good Ol' Days (back in the '80s when i was first going to what is now Dream, who i may in fact have first met there for that matter) who i hadn't seen in years. Blast-from-the-past-o-rama. Interesting to catch up on what various people i used to know are up to in their lives now, and i noticed it didn't make me at all bothered that i was still doing the same things (like i always say - when i find something better..)

The Redresser didn't end up playing - someone was sick - but the Devil Dolls made up for it. The best way i could think to describe their sound is if you can imagine Radio Birdman fronted by Polly Styrene from X-Ray Spex (they also did a Spex cover, to let me know i wasn't imagining it). It was great fun, with a kind of 1977 meets 1969 garage feel to it (shut up - it's my review and i'll talk like a wanker if i want to). The vocal shrieking is something you'd probably either love or hate, and of course i loved it, being still a big fan of stuff like X-Ray Spex, Vice Squad etc - i'll take that over a honey-smooth Amy Lee voice any day. The Halloween outfits were a nice touch too, especially singer Mirella's Bride of Frankenstein costume. Her on-stage bravado also reminded me of Lyn from Crashland, the band i came to see the first time i set foot in that venue 15 years ago, so that added to the Wayback Machine's fuel for the night.

After the band finished i lingered a few more hours, danced a bit, drank too much just for something different, didn't sit still long enough to talk to anyone properly, abused djs for playing bleep - the usual stuff. I've decided i have to make a conscious effort to stop myself cracking the sads every time i want to dance but don't like the music. In that place at least, i know i'm not going to have to wait hours to hear something i like, but it seems i haven't yet shrugged off the baggage of the too many times i have in the past. Ah well, "time will drift my pain away" (angst, pout). The other thing i might do is follow through with an old idea of printing out a list of my favourite dancing songs, so i can remember them when some one says "got any requests?", instead of going blank for everything but what the last dj played.

Hit the road about 4.30 and the hay a little after five, just a little before Elaine had to get up for work. I'd probably gotten a couple of hours sleep in total before some arsehole telemarketer rang at 9am to try to sell me whatever, and i was too tired to even think to abuse him. Next time.

Tonight should be a quiet one, but Bit By Bats may be a contender for tomorrow night. Might even slip in a bit of sleep before then too.
