As some of you might know, Elaine has quit her job and is now doing full time study in disability care, something she's wanted to do for a while.  She's also been looking into doing some part time work in that field as well, and has had quite a few offers already.  Apparently there's a great demand for people to do that sort of work.

That's been something of an eye-opener for me.  For some time i've been thinking about what i want to do with my life, and how unmotivated i am doing a job that makes no real difference to anything but my bank balance (and that of my boss).  i've been thinking of a change of career, but had no idea what else i might want to do.  The idea of something that actually did something positive was a nice daydream, but it seemed anything like that was an area for a handful of highly skilled professionals, with unpaid volunteers filling the gaps left by lack of funding.  But seeing the demand for people to work in this area has gotten me thinking about that sort of direction, which i've never considered before.  It's not so much about the opportunities but about the need.  This is something that would make a difference to people's lives, simply because there aren't enough people willing to do this sort of work.  It's not like some other job where, if you don't do it, there's plenty of others who will.  Which is not to say that i would necessarily be cut out for this work exactly, but it at least has opened my eyes to the idea that there are areas where it's possible to do something for a living that really does make a difference.  It's not a question of what sort of work i'd like to do, as what sort of work needs doing.

Of course, i won't be doing anything for a while, as my job will be pretty much our only income for most of this year, but it's at least given me something to think about.  Who knows, maybe this could be a step closer to finally working out what i want to do when i grow up..
